Bleeding Tool Series

Every part of this series was made with different kinds of stone carved and constructed together. I intend to explore the attributes of various stones, especially hematite (also known as “bloodstone”) which is composed of iron. The stone is ironed-gray but its streaks are red-brown (see the picture on the right side). When I was carving hematite with a carving knife and water, the hematite powder and the water immediately turned into the red  as if the stone was bleeding. This is similar to humans’ bleeding wounds. Fascinated by the similarity between hematite and flesh, I was inspired to create this series to portray the human condition.
